Fertility Supplements That Help Get Your Pregnant
Research proves women who take supplements get pregnant faster and have better pregnancies.
The science is in – it’s important for both men and women to take supplements in preparation for pregnancy. Here’s an example of a study from Stanford that showed that thirty women between the ages of 24 – 46 who had not been able to conceive, were far more likely to have success after taking supplements. The results show a 30% pregnancy rate in the group that took supplements, vs 0 pregnancies in the placebo group.
There are countless other studies showing similar results and defining the benefits of specific key nutrients on both male and female fertility. It’s just as important for men to supplement for fertility as well. In fact, I see this all the time in my clinic– results are significantly improved among those taking supplements. It makes sense– the healthier the person, the healthier their genetic material (eggs and sperm), the healthier the pregnancy and child. And I would recommend starting 3 months before you actively start trying to conceive (read the 88 days to fertility blog post for more on that rationale).
Which supplements and vitamins are most important for fertility?
I’ve done a lot of reading and research and have crafted these recommendations based on that research and my clinical experience in helping fertility-challenged couples to get pregnant. Here are my recommendations.
When should you start taking fertility supplements?
The quick answer – at least three months, and even longer is better. It takes about 3 months for both eggs and sperm to mature. I go into this in more detail in another post called 88 Days to Fertility which you can check out here.
The quality of supplements is extremely important.
Vitamins and supplements aren’t always well regulated, and there is a huge range in the quality of these kinds of products. Be sure to use a brand that uses quality ingredients, organic products, and is research-based. Third-party inspected and certified that what’s on the label is actually in the bottle is always something important to look for too. Professional-grade supplements - meaning they must be sold to you by a health professional - are more potent. Consumer grade products just have so little of the active ingredient in them in addition to the quality of that ingredient being inferior. When you take the right quality and quantity you can see far more effect which is the entire point of spending your hard-earned money on supplements, isn’t it?
I recommend the brand Metagenics. They are top-notch and can only be purchased through a healthcare provider. If you’re in Canada, you can purchase them through me and get 20% off your first order.
